In Conversation with Huey Lewis

February 10, 2025 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Born in New York City, Huey Lewis moved to Marin County, California, at the age of four, where he grew up surrounded by the vibrant West Coast music scene. His passion for music began at an early age, and by the time he attended the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey, he had already picked up the harmonica, an instrument that would become central to his sound.

After high school, Lewis spent a year hitchhiking across Europe, playing his harmonica wherever he could. He briefly attended Cornell University, where he balanced his time between performing in bands and attending classes. Ultimately, his love for music took precedence, and Lewis left Cornell to return to California, where he joined the country-rock band Clover. For six years, Clover played tirelessly across the U.S. and Europe, earning a record deal with Phonogram Records. The band recorded two albums in Wales before disbanding in 1977.

In 1980, Lewis formed the iconic rock band Huey Lewis and The News with bandmates Johnny Colla, Bill Gibson, Sean Hopper, Chris Hayes, and Mario Cipollina. Their self-titled debut album launched a successful career that would produce chart-topping hits like “The Power of Love,” “Hip to Be Square,” and “If This Is It.” Known for their energetic live performances and classic blend of rock and roll, the band became a defining force of 1980s music.

In addition to his success as a musician, Lewis has also enjoyed a diverse career in entertainment. He starred as Billy Flynn in the Broadway production of Chicago, appeared in the film Duets alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, and guest-starred on popular television shows like Hot in Cleveland. His versatile talents and willingness to take on new challenges have made him a beloved figure in show business.

With numerous awards and accolades to his name, Huey Lewis continues to be celebrated for his contributions to music and entertainment.
